Below is a general care guide for Medinilla plants which can slightly differ depending on variety.
Light & Temperature
Medinilla plants love bright sun but not direct light. Keep the plant away from windows or doors to protect it from cold drafts. Drafts will increase water loss and may cause leaves to drop, eventually leading to death of the plant.
Watering, Humidity & Misting
The Medinilla shows you when it needs watering. The flowers will become limp if the soil has become too dry. After hydrating the plant, the flowers should look beautiful again. Ensure there is no water sitting underneath the pot to avoid root rot. These plants love and thrive in a humid environment. It needs to be misted frequently or grown in a room with plenty of humidity. You can also use a pebble tray for a slow release of moisture.
Soil and Repotting
Medinilla prefers rich but light soil. They grow well in slighly acidic soil created by adding peat moss to the potting mix. Using diluted acidifying fertiliser to adjust the soil pH can also be an option. Repotting is only necessary when the roots almost grow out of the pot.
Propagation
Medinilla can be propagated by taking a cutting with at least two leaves, removing two-thirds of each leaf to reduce weight on the stem. Use a powdered rooting hormone as a stem dip to hasten rooting. Propagation from seeds is also possible.
Fertiliser
This plant is a light feeder and will do well with occasional feeding. Use a balanced fertiliser formulated for houseplants. Follow the directions on the label of our Down to Earth. organic plant food.
Toxicity
Medinilla plants can be toxic if ingested in large quantities and should be kept out of the reach of children and pets.
Possible Issues
Under the right care and conditions, your plant will grow happy and healthy. But here are some issues you may encounter while caring for a Medinilla:
Mealybugs, aphids and scales - Daily misting will discourage these pests. When spotted, try to spray it off with a hard jet of water. If the pests persist, try using a neem oil.
Leaf drop or yellowing leaves- This may be caused by lack of light, dry soil, too little moisture, poor soil or a combination of these factors. Try changing your care maintenance and adjust accordingly.
